• | Surprise Canyon - Description | |
|
The Surprise Canyon is located at the Notom-Bullfrog Road. One access starts at the junction Notom-Bullfrog Road/Highway 24 between Torrey and Hanksville near the west boarder of Capitol Reef National Park. Follow the Notom-Bullfrog Road to the south parallel to the Waterpocket Fold for about 35 miles (the road leads to Bullfrog Marina and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area).
Another possibility provides the Burr Trail, a scenic drive from Boulder, eastward to the Notom-Bullfrog Road. Most of the 36.5 miles Burr Trail is paved. The 5.3 mile long graveled part, starting at Capitol Reef National park boundary, includes a breathtaking set of switchbacks rising some 800 feet in 1.5 mile (4WD recommended).
The trailhead and parking area of Surprise Canyon is located on the west side of the road, about 1.8 miles south of the Notom-Bullfrog junction with the Burr Trail. The trailhead is marked with a sign. Surprise Canyon is a short narrow gorge with no serious obstacles and can be hiked with whole family in just a few hours round trip.
Surprise Canyon rewards with interesting geological views from inside the Waterpocket Fold, a classic monocline.
